Silicone and Saline Breast Implants Compared 

Silicone breast implants have been used since the early l960's for cosmetic purposes and for breast reconstruction in women who have had mastectomies.  

Silicone breast implants are popular as they are filled with silicone gel, which feels softer and more natural than saline breast implants.  Women who are cost csnscious in respect of breast enhancement cost should keep in mind that silicone breast implants are much more costly than implants of the saline type.

Many people consider that Silicone Breast Implants Are Unsafe, Despite the recent approval of their use by the FDA, there are certainly significant risks that women must take int account prio to undergoing silicone implant surgery, including the possibility that Silicone breast implants can leak platinum into the body.

Researchers in Austria have identified proteins that accumulate on the surface of silicone breast implants, which they say could be the cause of immune reactions in women who have them.  

Saline implants have a silicone rubber shell that is inflated to the desired size with sterile saline water, and  can also fail, but such failures are quickly recognized by women as their breasts deflate.  

They are also prone to rippling, causing wavy indentations to appear along the bottom of the breast.  

Both silicone and saline breast implants can rupture or leak, and it is worth noting, that most breast implants, which often are given to women who have undergone a mastectomy to treat breast cancer, contain saline solution.


At this time, there is no scientific proof that ruptured silicone implants cause cancer or autoimmune disorders, nor is there evidence that breast implants affect pregnancy or the ability to breast feed.

Regular examinations for breast health and to evaluate the condition of your implants are important whether you have chosen saline or silicone breast implants.  For this reason, woman with breast implants are advised to visit their surgeons annually to confirm that the implants are in good shape.
